We have 2-3 weeks to visit both, but don't want it to be too hot in Cairns!

I went to Australia last September. It was warm in Cairns and I was comfortable wearing shorts. People were outside basking in the sun and the ocean was beautiful. It was great weather though, not too hot. I think it was in the 70's.

When we got to Melbourne though, it was cooler and we had to wear long sleeves most of the time. It was kind of cold on the ocean too which isn't too far away.

Autumn is very nice here in Melbourne. The recent Commonwealth Games was practically uninterupted by rain. Looking out the window now, it is sunny but the last week it has just started to get cold. You might also consider a visit to Tasmania - it is gorgeous and is only an hour flight from Melbourne. For domestic fares, the cheapest can be found at www.jetstar.com or www.virginblue.com.au

You want to go outside of the Box Jellyfish season so you can go in the water in Cairns. The season for the Box Jellyfish starts with the onset of the wet across the top of northern Australia, usually around October and lasts until April.

These can easily kill you, so don't think they are like other jellyfish.
