Melbourne is a safe city. Crime exists in Australia & Melbourne (of course). There is organised crime that onyl generally affects those directly involved. The police force in Australia and Melbourne is generally well staffed and trained.

Very safe though you need to use 'common sense'. Downtown gets a bit deserted at night. Safer than Sydney
